System Administrator Guide

Preface

Before You Proceed

This guide is for installing C-MOLD on Intel or DEC Alpha CPU-based computers running Windows 95 or Windows NT and for UNIX workstations. The Windows 95 and NT versions are installed in a similar manner via a SETUP procedure. The UNIX version includes an INSTALL script that automates installation by copying several compressed tar files, expanding the tar files, and checking the setup of environment variables used by C-MOLD.

If you are currently running a version of C-MOLD earlier than 96.7, you will need a new keyfile to enable C-MOLD. Chapter 2 explains how to obtain your key file. If you are updating from 96.7 or a higher release and your support and update is current, your existing key file will enable this release.
Chapter 1, "Checking System Requirements," describes the hardware and software required for installing and funning C-MOLD.

Chapter 2, "Obtaining C-MOLD Keyfiles," explains how to get a keyfile.

Chapter 3, "Installing C-MOLD," contains the specific installation instructions for UNIX and Windows 95 and NT users.

Chapter 4, "Updating Customizations in the User Databases," gives you the procedure for updating the new databases with customizations you made to the previous version.

The rest of the guide contains lots of information we've found helpful over the years in troubleshooting installation problems and configuring C-MOLD to your particular site. You might want to quickly glance through the remaining information to know what is available should a problem arise.

Intended Audience

The C-MOLD System Administrator Guide was written for the person who is responsible for maintaining the C-MOLD programs at your site. The semi-automated installation procedure is straightforward enough for end-users to perform in most situations; but for more complicated network installations, you will want to be comfortable working with the system aspects of your computer. This will typically be the system administrator or a person who has considerable knowledge of Windows 95, Windows NT, or UNIX.

To install the Windows NT version, you'll need to know the administrator password for the machine. If you are installing the UNIX version, you'll need to know the root or superuser password for the computers on which C-MOLD is to be installed. You must be familiar with the commands cd, mkdir, tar, cp, ln, mv, rm, and a text editor such as vi or emacs. You should also know how to set environment variables in C shell, Korn shell, or Bourne shell. Last, you should understand the basics of the X Window System and the OSF/Motif Graphical User Interface (GUI), including the programs X, xdm, xterm, and mwm.

Installation Time Estimate

Installing C-MOLD on a single computer will take about 15 minutes, depending on your particular system. This estimate does not include the time it takes to install any of the required system software listed in Chapter 1. Most of you, however, will have already done this.
