With the SGI default configuration, the display images covered by a pull-down menu do not restore automatically after the menu closes. To solve this problem, follow these steps to enable the backing-store feature for the window manager:

1. Log in as root.
2. Edit /usr/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers. Change the occurrence of -bs to -s, which simultaneously re-enables backing-store while disabling save-unders. (Clarification: -bs must NOT appear; -su MUST appear).
3. Save the file.
4. Kill the Xsgi process to kill the X server, or reboot the machine.
